Black Saturday - Sir Miles Partridge : English Courtier during the reigns of Henry VIII - Blog :

Sir Mile Partridge (died 26 February 1552) was an English courtier during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI . During the reign of Henry VIII, Miles Partridge often played Chess against King Henry VIII. On one occasion, when playing with the King, staked 100 pounds against the Celebrated Ring of Bells and the Bell House of Jesus Chapel in the Churchyard of St Paul's Cathedral, Miles won the game, and had the Bells from the Cathedral taken down and Broken. He was granted the manor of Almondsbury in 1544, and served as High Sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1546 to 1547.

Sir Miles Partridge accompanied the Duke of Somerset, the Protector to Scotland in 1547, fought at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh on the 10th September 1547. He was Knighted at Roxburgh on the 28th September 1547.

When Henry VIII died in 1547, the Duke of Somerset, uncle to the new King Edward VI, was now effectively ruling the England as its Lord Protector. Like Henry, Somerset liked the idea of an alliance with Scotland, involving the marriage of Prince Edward to the young Scottish Queen Mary. But the Scots rejected the proposal as it would have meant having to adopt Reformation, thus breaking their links with the Papacy.

And so the Rough Wooing would continue, but this time it would get really rough.

The main action began on the 10th September 1547 with a charge by the English Cavalry.

The epic defeat by the Scots became known as Black Saturday.
