Exercise Talisman Sabre 2019
Welcome to the Exercise Talisman Sabre 2019 (TS19) website. Here you will learn about TS19, the importance of the exercise to preparing our military, how we involve the community and protect the environment.
TS19 is a bilateral combined Australian and United States (US) training activity.
TS19 is designed to practise our respective military services and associated agencies in planning and conducting Combined and Joint Task Force operations, and improve the combat readiness and interoperability between Australian and US forces.
Occurring every two years, Talisman Sabre is a major exercise reflecting the closeness of our alliance and strength of the enduring military relationship.
TS19 will be the eighth iteration of the exercise and consists of a Field Training Exercise incorporating force preparation (logistic) activities, amphibious landings, land force manoeuvre, urban operations, air operations, maritime operations and Special Forces activities.

What is Exercise Talisman Sabre
The Talisman Sabre series of exercises is the principle Australian and US military bilateral training exercise focused on the planning and conduct of mid-intensity “high end” warfighting. Historically Talisman Sabre exercises have been conducted across northern and eastern Australia, and within Australia’s Exclusive Economic Zone. Additional participants from third party nations may participate or observe the exercise if invited.
When is it being held
TS19 will run from late June to early August 2019, including the initial surge of equipment and people and their subsequent departure after the exercise. Exercise activities in Shoalwater Bay Training Area and region will commence from early July and peak during 11-24 July 2019.
Note the Australian Navy, Army and Air Force will do lead up training in the region prior to TS19. While that training is separate to TS19, please Contact Us if you have any questions and we will direct your question to the relevant service to respond.
How are Communities Involved
Community engagement is already underway with graziers, local government, communities and businesses. It is important as many interested parties as possible hear about the exercise program and are encouraged to provide input.
We formally brief councils and other stakeholders on the exercise after each major planning conference, and will provide updates on this website and Facebook as planning progresses. The Community Information page has information on how you can contact us with any questions or ideas.
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has a long history of training and living in the Rockhampton and Livingstone region.
Defence takes all necessary steps to safeguard the environment during TS19. The ADF protects endangered species and marine mammals through a comprehensive framework of risk mitigation procedures developed after careful analysis of all Defence maritime activities, ensuring it complies with relevant Queensland and Commonwealth legislation.
